Descendants of Thomas Dane
Our ancestor Thomas Dane was born in 1603 probably in Cranbrook, Kent, England. He died 02 Feb. 1676 at Concord, Ma. Thoms first married, in 1638 at Concord, Ma., Elizabeth (–) whose surname and ancestry is unknown. She was the mother of all of Thomas Dane’s children. Elizabeth (–) died, probably in Concord, Ma., prior to 1673 at which time Thomas married, as his second wife, Mildred (–), whose surname and ancestry is unknown. Mildred (–) d 15 Sept.1673. Thomas Dane’s will, undated, was proved 20 June 1676.
The ship “Elizabeth and Ann”, Roger Cooper, Master, embarked at London, England on 09 May 1635 for New England. One of the passengers aboard was Thomas Dane who was noted as being 32 years of age. Thomas Dane settled in Concord, probably shortly after he arrived in New England, as he married there his first wife, Elizabeth (–), in 1638. Thomas, with his family, remained in Concord, Ma. for the rest of his life
Thomas Dane was a carpenter by trade and judging by the lack of records re Thomas, we can assume that he was a good consistent citizen who pursued his vocation and stayed out of trouble. On the 4th of June, 1658, he contracted to put over for seven years, to Thomas Welch of Charleston, Ma., his servant Thomas Ches(man??), aged about eleven; this servant had been bound to Thomas Dane, by the Officers of Cranbrook, Kent, for sixteen years or until the servant attained he age of twenty one. Many settlers to New England made arrangements in England for “bound” servants, i.e., “bound” for an agreed time period in exchange for travel costs and nominal financial pay during the agreed time. In this case it is possible that Thomas Ches(man??) came as a servant and carpenter apprentice.
All of Thomas and Elizabeth (–) Dane’s children, except Elizabeth, subsequently married in Concord, Ma. Daughter Elizabeth was born on 25 October 1648 and died 20 April 1649. Thomas Dane’s will reflects bequests to his son Joseph and to his daughters Sarah Heald, Mary Pellet, and Hannah Page.
